ECO-KIDS: Reducing Our Ecological Footprints

  • Conserve water even while you brush your teeth, don't leave the water running!
  • Limit showers to 5 minutes, and you can even use an egg timer to time yourself.
  • Collect rainwater in a barrel on rainy days to water the garden and lawn.
  • Remind your parents to water the lawn and garden late evening or early morning. Doing this, you'll lose less to evaporation.
  • Help your parents plant a tree in the yard.
  • Help place a plant every few hundred square feet within your home. This will improve the quality of the air that you and your family breathe.
  • Save those seeds! Use seeds from foods you eat to plant in your garden during the next growing season.
  • Get cloth bags for groceries instead of using paper or plastic. Some stores offer a discount when you do this, so you can save money while you save trees!
  • Ask parents to replace all batteries with rechargeable batteries.
  • Turn off the lights when you leave a room.
  • When you see trash outside, pick it up and place in its proper receptacle. Every small thing you do makes a huge difference!
  • Make sure you turn off your game stations, lights and television when you are finished. You'll save electricity, and the power plants will produce less pollution.
  • Keep windows and doors closed when the air conditioner is running.
  • Decide what you want to have before going to the refrigerator, then close the door right after you pick what you want!
  • Ask your parents to replace all light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. These bulbs last 10 times longer and are 4 times more energy efficient!
  • Put on a sweater instead of turning the heat up.
  • Use both sides of each piece of paper you use, each person uses an average of 580 pounds per year. You can help lower that number and save trees!
  • Swap toys you no longer use with your friends, reusing things helps to create less waste.
  • Think about how you can reduce waste anywhere you go. For example, ask for a cone at the ice cream parlor instead of a cup, remind your parents to bring their own garment bag to the dry cleaners, opt for dishes and silverware instead of paper plates and plastic utensils, and ask your parents to replace paper napkins with cloth napkins. There are so many things you can do!
  • Speak up! When you have an idea on ways to save energy or to protect the environment, tell someone! Let parents or teachers know, and ask them to help you make it happen! Brainstorm ideas with your friends.
